How a French wedding day actually runs
If your only reference is a British or American wedding, the shape of the day will surprise you.

Two consequences. Everything you'd call the reception starts late, so a half-day package ending at 19:00 misses dinner entirely. And couple portraits belong in the golden hour — in late June near Toulouse that means slipping away around 20:30, a window we agree with your caterer in advance.
The mairie: what the civil ceremony means for foreign couples
In France, only the civil ceremony at the town hall creates a marriage. A church or celebrant ceremony carries no legal weight, and a priest won't proceed until the mairie has done its part. It lasts 20 to 30 minutes, it's public, and it's conducted in French by the mayor or a deputy in a tricolour sash. In Toulouse it happens at the Capitole.
- Residency. One of you, or one of your parents, must be domiciled in the commune with at least 30 days' continuous residence before the banns go up. This is why most UK and US couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. Nobody at the venue will blink.
- The dossier. Birth certificates less than six months old for documents issued abroad, valid ID, proof of address, and the names and ID of two to four witnesses.
- Consular papers. Foreign nationals are usually asked for a certificat de coutume and a certificat de célibat. Start three to four months out.
- The banns, posted at the mairie for ten days beforehand.
- Days and hours. No mairie marries anyone on a Sunday or a public holiday, and small communes often only do Saturday mornings. Your whole timeline hangs off the slot they give you.
The vin d'honneur, explained
It looks like a cocktail hour and it isn't. The vin d'honneur runs a solid two hours, outdoors if the weather allows, with crémant or a Gaillac white, charcuterie and something involving duck. The guest list is often wider than the dinner list: inviting colleagues and neighbours to the vin d'honneur only is completely normal here.
It's also the richest part of the day to photograph, and when we get your group shots done in ten minutes rather than herding sixty people around a lawn.
Destination weddings and elopements in the Pyrenees
The mountains start an hour south of Toulouse. Foix and its castle are 85 km away; Ax-les-Thermes about 130 km. Further west, the Cirque de Gavarnie and the Pic du Midi sit two and a half to three hours out — beyond our 100 km ring, so those days are quoted separately, usually with an overnight stay.

In short: an elopement here is normally a celebrant-led ceremony for two, with the legal marriage done at home first. We walk in with you, shoot for three or four hours, and leave you the mountain. High passes such as the Tourmalet stay shut by snow until roughly June; June and September give you open roads, clear skies and no August haze. Storms build fast above 1,500 m, so we plan mornings.
Closer in, the region delivers without the altitude: Gaillac vineyards at 60 km, Albi's red-brick cathedral at 75 km, the walled Cité of Carcassonne at 95 km, and Gascon farmhouses with a long table under plane trees.
